Student feature – Emily Barresi

Barresi,Emily

Emily Barresi is from Greenwich, Connecticut. She is a fourth-year fine art photography student and is also working on a minor in art history. She will be graduating from RIT in May 2015. Her recent work explores relationships of material possessions and ways mass-produced products convey emotion, sentimentality, and communication.

What was your most challenging assignment as a photography student?
[E.M.]This question is difficult! I can say that one of my most challenging(and memorable) photography projects was during my first year at RIT. I had gotten into a pretty nasty bike crash before class and ended up in the hospital later that night with a minor concussion. With a photography project due in the next couple of days, I knew I needed to be shooting. Waiting around for hours in the hospital bed was the last thing I wanted. Thankfully I grabbed my Yashica [pictured] moments before leaving for the hospital. Against nurses orders I walked around my room and some of the pediatric ward (I was 18 at the time) to photograph this dizzying blur of a day. I wanted to capture the way I had felt, which was confined and confused. I was looking for inspiration in an otherwise dark place.

What do you love about this school?
[E.M.] I love being surrounded by incredibly passionate artists! Talent runs deep through the School. I find it impossible to remain stagnant in such a kinetic environment. We [the students and faculty] are constantly raising the bar for quality and creativity of new work. I am inspired by interactions here every day.
