Big Shot No. 29
The RIT Big Shot project was conceived as way to teach sophomore photography students at RIT how to solve complicated problems using simple equipment. It was built upon the principles of team building and working together as a unit and not individuals. The first project was produced December 1987 and subsequent photographs have been made consecutively since that date. On February 9, 2014 RIT Big Shot No. 29 will be created. It will feature a spectacular view of downtown Rochester, NY and High Falls located on the Genesee River. Additional elements will include a CSX freight train and the former Erie Canal aqueduct. This photograph represents the 11th Big Shot of Rochester produced in the winter.
The project is a community nighttime event and people are invited to participate by lighting an assigned part of the subject for a prescribed amount of time. The project has traveled the globe to make these unique and often one-of-a-kind images. Prior subjects include the Intrepid Air Sea and Space Museum located in New York City; the Alamo, San Antonio, Texas; the King’s Palace, Stockholm, Sweden; the Pile Gate in Dubrovnik, Croatia and Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas.
The Big Shot relies on the participation of many and the generosity of important collaborators. Over the years, Big Shot has been fortunate to have generous partners in the City of Rochester, Nikon, Profoto, Arlington Camera, and many others. Below are examples of Big Shot photographs made in the month of December featuring buildings and scenes from the city. We are looking forward to seeing what happens Sunday, February 9th.
