A Student’s Point of View
RITphoto is excited to introduce Ashley Crichton, a second year advertising photography student. Ashley will be working for the School as a student blogger.
Ashley wrote,
I will be writing about my experiences as a student at RIT. I want to explore how the school has developed its programs that leads students through a progression from their first to senior year. I am becoming more aware of this continuum of mentoring and academics by watching some of my friends as they prepare to graduate and begin working as a professional photographer in the summer of 2018.
I have learned in my 3 three semesters at RIT, students do not come here for the weather. 🙂
This photo made in front of Gannett Hall reveals a typical gray day that defines winter in Rochester.
Before coming to RIT, I had a hard time understanding what a photography student did in their classes. I could not find an inside view into what classes would be like. If I could have found that information, it would have made my decision to attend RIT so much easier. Through these blog posts, I hope to help prospective RIT photography students learn what they will be doing at RITphoto should they chose to attend. I hope this will provide useful when considering the selection of photography as a major.
My future posts will come in the following way. One post will feature a student who is enrolled in a class representative of their year. The other will feature their professor in that class. I want to explore the professor’s philosophy and approach to teaching photography. My next post will feature first-year student Sophie Cox who will be working in the studios for the first time, learning how to work with artificial light.
That post will be followed chronicling a second-year student who will be learning how to use strobe lighting for the first time. I hope to follow this format for the whole semester, explaining each different year level and what the photography program has to offer to students in each year of their program. Thanks for reading my posts.
